The Canadian Centre for Women’s Empowerment (CCFWE) is a national organization working to advance economic safety, financial inclusion, and justice for people affected by economic abuse. Through research, education, advocacy, and collaboration with governments and financial institutions, CCFWE works to improve how economic abuse is recognized, prevented, and addressed.
I really don’t know if there could be an organization that is more in alignment with what I hope to do.
National Survivor Council
One of CCFWE’s initiatives is the National Survivors Council, which brings together people from across Canada who have experienced economic abuse.
The council was established to ensure that survivors’ lived experiences help inform CCFWE’s work, including identifying gaps in policies, services, and institutional responses. Its purpose is not simply to raise awareness, but to help translate what survivors have experienced into meaningful improvements in how systems respond.
I didn’t know about the CCFWE, but as soon as a friend sent me the link to apply for this council, I knew I had to be a part of it. I don’t just have my own experience of economic abuse, as a tax specialist I have a whole host of other people’s experiences to pull from too – along with an understanding of how a lot of these financial systems work.
The council first met as a group in May 2026 and it has already been so much more than I could have hoped for. Getting to sit with women who have lived through experiences similar to mine, and who are also passionate about creating change, has been incredibly validating and inspiring, all on its own.
We’ve done educational sessions that have helped me immensely in pushing for the changes I’d like to see.
I also think that the CCFWE is the most trauma-informed organization I’ve ever encountered and I’ve learned so much already about how to do this work in a productive and self-protective manner.
This post will be updated as we continue on with our work together!
